Salton Sea Ruins

A former motorhome on the shores of the Salton Sea.

Recently I spent a day in the Salton Sea area of California with some photographer friends. In all its desolation and desperation, there’s a certain level of ingenuity evident from those who choose to eke out an existence in those harsh circumstances, and it’s permeable if you pay attention. It’s not a life I could envision for myself but I admire those who can. I’ve posted the shots to a set on Flickr.

The opening reception for my current show at Whole Foods Market in Venice was a tremendous success. So many friends, family and colleagues came out in support. I am honored and feel the love!

The opening ran from 5:30pm-8:30pm and featured DJ Kevin Chills spinning a groovy set of downtempo, a perfect complement to the visual display, as well as a tasty spread of  hors d’oeuvres sponsored by one of Whole Foods’ vendors. There was a near-constant flow of visitors mingled with curious shoppers who heard the music throughout the store and came to see what all the fuss was about.

Initial early feedback has been entirely positive on both the prints and they way they are laid out on the wall. Since this was my first show, I was mostly “winging it” in how I chose the layout so I am grateful to know I was “in the ballpark”.

I am pleased to say that I sold several prints during the opening and shortly thereafter. Given that my work will be on display for the next month, I hope to continue that success, and am hard at work preparing my work for even bigger printing, a popular request from the friends in attendance at the show. All of the prints in the show, as well as many others, are also available for purchase in my photo store in limited editions. If you aren’t able to make it by Whole Foods before Dec. 14, please do come visit my online gallery to see what I think of as my best work.

Immense gratitude to those who helped make it a memorable night…Dave for all his ingenuity & emotional support; Kevin for his sultry sounds; Kelly for the opportunity; and all who cheered me on both before and during! Thanks y’all!

Just in time for my show this evening, I am pleased to announce that my online photo store is open for business. If you are a fan of photography and haven’t checked it out yet, head over here to see what there is to offer. I’m still working out a few things so there may be some minor changes occurring in the weeks and months ahead, but it’s ready to be seen. I hope you enjoy.

If you like what you see, please consider sharing the link with your friends and loved ones – I believe heartily in the power of word-of-mouth. Each photo page has a “Share” button for this purpose. Holiday season is fast-approaching and I hope you’ll keep me in mind when shopping for holiday gifts. A photograph might just be the thing your loved one would enjoy receiving.

Woop woop…the moment is almost here! When Kelly from Whole Foods approached me this past summer and asked me if I would be interested in showing my shots in a solo show, I jumped for joy. Thrilled at the opportunity, I’ve been hard at work these past months getting my photo library in shape to prepare for my first show. There has been lots to do, but it’s right on schedule. If you’re in the Los Angeles area and would like to show some support, please consider stopping by. Even if you can’t make it to the opening reception, my work will be on display for the month following, until Dec. 14, so you can peruse at your leisure.

The details:

Thursday, Nov. 18, 5:30pm-8:30pm
“Locals Night” at Whole Foods Venice, feat. photographer Maggie Houtz

Venice, CA 90291

(located in the Whole Body section, center of the store)

We will have a DJ, food, and lots of friends on hand. Additionally, as of November Whole Foods is an official stop on the map of the Venice Art Crawl so there will be plenty of amazing art to see throughout the city. Why not make an evening of it and come check it out?

I’m thrilled to announce that I’ve been asked to display my photos at Whole Foods Market in Venice as a part of their Local Artisans section. Once a month they have a Locals Night where they feature local farms & vendors, local musicians and have an opening reception for a visual artist. I’ve been chosen for November’s opening and am hard at work getting everything in order!

The reception date will be confirmed shortly and I’ll post another announcement, but it will likely be midweek the week before Thanksgiving. My pieces will continue being displayed for the following month, so even if you can’t make it to the opening reception, please do stop by at any other point to check it out. Details to follow…
